The USA Rugby Boys High School All-Americans open their Argentina tour against Cordoba Academy at the Jockey Club’s outstanding rugby facilities Thursday evening with a 7:00 P.M local time kick-off. Argentina is one hour behind Eastern Standard Time.

Argentina have developed a regional academy system to better serve their age grade development and it s paying off with improved performances from the U18s through U20s. It is the pathway to the Pumas in sevens and 15s.

The HSAAs arrived Monday and have had five practices to prepare for this first of two games in Cordoba. Both teams are using 25-man rosters for the opener and also starting their U17s which, for the HSAAs, includes three sophomores born in 1997 – Steven Branham, (hooker from Fallbrook, in Calif.), Siaosi Mahoni (six-foot-seven lock from East Palo Alto) and wing Aaron Matthews from the Back Bay Sharks in Calif.

The HSAAS will start four seniors: Titi Lamositele (loose-head, from Chuckanut Bay, Wash.) Valdemar Lee-Lo (tight-head from Dixon H.S. and Dixon, Calif.) Malcolm May, (six, from St Ignatius, Chicago) and Zach Webber, ((full-back, from United Club in Orem, Utah).

Eight juniors make up the rest of the starting 15, including the half-back pairing of Michael Reid, (New Plymouth H.S. and Taranaki, New Zealand) and Ben Cima (fly-half from Gonzaga H.S. and Bethesda, Md.

“Tonight’s game will set the bar for us after three days of practice,” Head Coach Salty Thompson said. “There are so many areas where our game can and will improve over the two-week tour but the emphasis will be on defense, possession, go-forward, continuity and tactically playing the game in the Cordoba end. A tall order against the best academy in Argentina who will pressure the HSAA defense.”
